House open to the city

Miho Iwatsuki, Studio Velocity. Deconstructing people’s diversified lives.

In this project, we designed two houses: a transparent two-story house and a nontransparent three-story house. We situated these at opposite ends of the site, which is hemmed in on three sides by other buildings. This left a park-like courtyard space at the site’s center. All stories in both buildings are accessible via ramps. When we first started work on this design, we carefully observed our clients as they went about their daily lives. We thought the clients could live comfortably in a way that’ more open to the city, so we decided to divide the house in two according to its public and private functions. We believe that blending urban and residential environments will help realize architecture that lets people live free of boundaries.
