The utilitarian and aesthetic ethos of Brutalism isn’t the immediate partner or pairing one may assume when thinking about the calming effects of incense. But Kin Object’s series of incense holders seem to capture the raw architectural beauty of the modernist movement in miniature for the purpose of creating a pleasant environment through the sense of scent. Using elementary geometric shapes and concrete, the family-operated Kin Object’s incense holders are simple, yet rather capable of sparking the imagination; some may remember science class dioramas of the earth, while others identify an other-worldly building or the silhouette of a full moon. Imaginary landscapes and silhouettes suggestive of some of history’s most spectacular architectural monuments are amongst visions we see in the sum of these forms. The most dramatic offering is the Mountain and Lake Backflow Incense Holder, a design inspired by the traditional Chinese landscape of mountain and water. Designed to hold a cone-shaped incense at its precipice, the incense plume flows into the basin with the lazy flow of morning fog across the lake – a poetic vision of a the elements as if rendered by Marcel Breuer.
