MAGMA: Fernando Mastrangelo expands his ecologically-driven sculptural practice through a new mirror series inspired by volcanic formations. Mastrangelo’s study of natural forms continues with his latest series, MAGMA. Inspired by the destructive power of liquid magma cooling into volcanic rock, MAGMA pays homage to the unnerving beauty evoked by the transformation of landscapes through volcanic activity. Each piece is composed of black sand surrounding gold mirror using Mastrangelo’s signature sculpting methods. The sand extends off the mirror to create three-dimensional formations. With the release of MAGMA, Mastrangelo continues his sculptural conversation with climate change and a volatile Earth. The forms and textures suggest a landscape that has surpassed healthy temperatures and decayed to an existence of extreme heat. It is through MAGMA that Mastrangelo hopes viewers will consider their stake in climate change.
“For me, the MAGMA series references the global tension and worry in regards to our impending climate crisis. I feel that there is so much pressure rising to the surface and it’s bound to erupt; I hope not in the form of disaster but in the form of energetic action.” -Fernando Mastrangelo
Each MAGMA mirror is individually commissioned and unique-in-form. MAGMA Edition 01 is currently on display at 1st Dibs Gallery. MAGMA Edition 02 can be viewed by appointment at Fernando Mastrangelo Studio in Brooklyn, NY. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for scheduling.
