Dorte Mandrup-Poulsen’s Wadden Sea project shots led you to be selected as a finalist at the 2019 A+ AWARDS… If you happen to go to Denmark, I recommend you go and see it because the project is beautiful. The intervention is situated in a natural park dedicated to the observation of migratory birds. Dorte Mandrup built a courtyard by adding new buildings to the existing white brick building.

What material are the new buildings made of?

They are made of wood and straw and the construction technique was taken from the old Danish rural typologies. The volumes are very essential, they seem almost carved, but the technique used to make them is very ancient.

In some parts, are the walls also made of straw?

Yes exactly. This solution, in addition to allowing the creation of volumes that seem almost excavated, it has a very low environmental impact.
